Hickory Grove, SC - Ernest Irwin "Irvin" Benfield, 88, of 3715 Sawmill Road, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at White Oak Manor in York, SC.
The funeral will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Hickory Grove. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Bratton Funeral Home in York.
A native of Hickory Grove, Irvin was the son of the late Fred Washington and Martha Dowdle Benfield. He was a member of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church and the Watt Blackmon VFW Post 6381. Irvin was retired from Rock Hill Printing and Finishing, was a graduate of Hickory Grove High School, and served in the United States Army during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Bratton Benfield and their sons and their wives, Michael I Benfield and Susan of Smyrna, SC, John S. Benfield and Carol of Charleston, SC, Chris B Benfield and Lisa of Spartanburg, SC, two brothers, Ray Benfield and Robert Benfield of Rock Hill, SC, seven grandchildren, Danner, Bratton, Cassidy, William, Madison, and Matthew Benfield, and Robert Whitesides. In addition to his parents, Irvin was preceded in death by brothers, Roy Benfield, Fred Benfield Jr., Tom Benfield, and sisters Mary Moon and Ola Reed.
